Comets went into the match focused on transferring the hard work from training onto the court, with an emphasis on a smooth transition of the ball from defence to attack, working patiently through to the circle edge and feeding our shooters. As the game developed, we saw some great improvements in this area, with the team building momentum and linking together some fantastic passages of play. Unfortunately, as fatigue set in towards the latter stages, patience began to slip, and our attacking flow became harder to maintain.
Some astute tactical changes throughout the match made a real impact, with players coming off the bench and stepping up brilliantly when called upon. Comets continued to chase the lead, keeping the game within one or two goals on several occasions and ensuring the pressure stayed firmly on The Downs.
There were plenty of positives across the court! Our shooters delivered some fantastic work in the circle, including well-timed rebounds, while our defensive unit worked tirelessly to win turnovers through strong hands-over pressure, coming off the body and working brilliantly together as a unit.
Despite the fantastic effort and determination shown throughout, a few lapses in concentration and unforced errors at crucial moments proved costly, allowing The Downs to edge ahead in the final few minutes and take the win.
A tough result to take, but plenty of positives to build on as we continue to put our training into practice and develop our game.
